Katherine's Bio

Katherine Winter-Sellery is one of the creators of the Guidance Approach to Parenting, a program that applies conflict resolution skills to communicating more effectively with children. Through her popular workshops, TEDx talks, and her book, she has taught thousands of parents (and educators, social workers, medical professionals, and anyone else needing to converse with 5-year-olds to 95-year-old children) in a half dozen countries and cultures. Her aim is to minimize misunderstandings and melt-downs and communicate with more collaboration, cooperation, and consideration. Her methods have positively influenced relationships for generations and brought about healing and reconciliation in families that were suffering from disconnection.

In 2019, Katherine organized and chaired the National Summit on Mental Health and Mental Fitness, (sponsored by the International Association for Human Values), bringing together more than 50 scientists, politicians, and spiritual leaders with more than 500 attendees for a conference that looked beyond mental health treatment to holistic mental wellness. At the Summit, Katherine taught alongside experts including Rabbi Abraham Cooper, of the Simon Wiesenthal Center; the Rev. Michael Beckwith, of the Agape International Spiritual Center; Congressman Tim Ryan, of the Military Mental Health Caucus; and Marianne Williamson, best-selling author, and former presidential candidate. The Summit culminated with America Meditates where world-renowned meditation teacher Sri Sri Ravi Shankar of the Art of Living Foundation led the largest-ever group meditation in United States history when more than 7,000 people gathered together in Denver’s City Park and were joined by over a million people online!

Katherine trained with the late Marshall B. Rosenberg, creator of Nonviolent Communication, she also studied with Thomas Gordon, who created Parent Effectiveness Training in the 1960s and eventually created the Gordon Model of conflict resolution, and

Katherine is certified by his Institute as a Leadership Effectiveness Training instructor and also certified by the Effectiveness Training Institute of Australia in his Parent Effectiveness model.  She is completing her certification training with Dr. Ann Weiser Cornell in Inner Relationship dialogue and also teaches and guides people in how to be with their inner world. After teaching the Gordon and Rosenberg methods for several years, she decided to create her own method with her colleagues Claryss Jamieson and Dr. Porter, author of Children are People Too.  Their collaboration birthed the training now known as the Guidance Approach to Parenting.

Katherine is also a trained mediator, attended Law School, has certifications in different trauma models (Matrix Reimprinting, Emotional Freedom Technique), and teaches a breathing meditation modality with the Art of Living Foundation. She holds a B.A. from the University of Denver, and alongside becoming a mother, a mental health and parenting advocate, and an expert, she also owned and ran her own commodities-trading business in Hong Kong for 30 years.

Passionately committed to healing intergenerational dysfunction, Katherine has recently launched a 90 Day Parenting Reset Mastermind.  It is for anyone who is committed to creating transformation in their family. The program supports people by providing the community around them to hold the container to learn a combination of mindset shifts and the tools to implement day to day conflict resolution that doesn’t generate resentment or further isolate them from the family members.  Among other things, everyone learns to understand their own triggers, so that they may better understand their own needs, and be open to understanding the needs of the people around them to create safe and stable homes and families. Children who know their inner voices and can speak up while also being concerned about the others in the family and their feelings and needs.

Katherine speaks both English and Mandarin, and lived in Hong Kong for more than 30 years. She has been married to John Sellery for more than 30 years, and together they have two children, Pia and Sam. Katherine was chairwoman in HK for many years of the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, in addition to these boards she also served on the Board of Directors for the American Club in Hong Kong and chaired the charitable giving committee. She currently serves on a few boards, most notably VLOGMI, a platform committed to mentally healthy social media. With both of their children grown, Katherine and John now make their home in several cities around the world.

Why is the Guidance Approach to Parenting effective?

This training gives parents a roadmap to create a nurturing family environment for their kids. When you punish your child for losing control, you are punishing them for lack of skills and emotions, not for what they have done. If you acknowledge your child’s achievements without praising, and enable them to master their emotions, you help their personal development and growth.
